It actually looks rather like the home button seen on the Galaxy S6, although it's not a button - HTC's navigation controls are still built into the software seen on-screen. Unlike the standard M9, the M9+ packs a fingerprint reader, which you'll find on the front, below the screen. I'm expecting it therefore to look extremely crisp, although it'll have to be bright and have good colours too for me to deem it a success. While the M9 has a decent pixel density of 440 pixels per inch, the M9+ smashes that with a whopping 564 ppi. The display isn't just bigger but comes with a 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution, which is a significant boost over the 1,920x1,080-pixel screen on the regular M9. Whether the speakers on the M9+ manage to pump out similarly big sound remains to be seen - or heard, I should say. The fingerprint scanner sits in the middle of the bottom speaker, so presumably that speaker has had to be made smaller. The M9's speakers are easily loud enough to let me enjoy podcasts while banging around the kitchen trying to create a meal from whatever I've got left in the fridge. Not only are these speakers physically larger than you'll find in most phones, but their forward facing position means the sound is fired right at you, resulting in better-sounding audio all round. The front of the phone is home to HTC's iconic Boomsound speakers, which sit above and below the display.

The M9 is certainly one of the most premium feeling Android phones around and I'm hoping that the M9+ hasn't done anything to detract from that. I really liked the silver and gold colour scheme on the standard M9, and adored the luxurious feel of the metal body. Like the standard M9, it'll come in a silver brushed metal back with polished rose gold edges, and you'll be able to pick it up in regular silver or gunmetal grey colours too. If you like putting your own stamp on a phone, the M9 may be right up your street.The phone is still encased entirely in metal, with a one-piece construction. The new version brings much deeper customisation options though, including a range of preset themes, as well as being able to choose fonts, icon styles and colour schemes. It's a neat layout, with simple, well-spaced app icons in the app tray, an easy to use settings menu and the BlinkFeed news and social network aggregator sitting off to the left of the home screen. On the surface, Sense 7 looks pretty much the same as Sense 6 found on the M8. HTC has heavily customised the overall look of Android, however, with the latest version of its Android skin, Sense 7. The M9 arrives with the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop software on board and I'd expect nothing less from a top-end phone. In my experience, there's almost no discernible benefit in a higher resolution panel on a screen that size, and only results in the battery being drained faster. I'm glad to see HTC hasn't opted for a 2K screen as we've seen on LG's G3, and which is rumoured for the Galaxy S6. Unsurprisingly then, it looked every bit as crisp and bright, although I'll leave the final verdict on the display's quality for the final review.
